A Call for Proposals on Reducing Environmental Impact throughout the Lifecycle of Semiconductors and FPDs
Tokyo Electron (TEL) is inviting all businesses and research organizations to submit proposals on the measures to reduce the lifetime environmental impact of our semiconductor/display production equipment, covering everything from its design, development, and manufacturing to its use in production lines and eventual disposal/recycling.
Application guideline
We recently introduced a supply chain initiative called E-COMPASS. With a determination to act as a leading company in the industry and following our corporate philosophy that states “We strive to contribute to the development of a dream-inspiring society through our leading-edge technologies and reliable service and support,” we are making an open call for businesses and research organizations to propose measures to reduce our environmental impact throughout the value chain.
Eligible proposals
To be eligible, a proposal must address the reduction of environmental impact from such processes as design, development, and manufacturing of semiconductor and/or display production equipment, as well as its use in the production of semiconductors and FPDs and final disposal/recycling. Detailed eligibility requirements are provided below for each process.
1 Product design and development
Regarding the upstream process of designing and developing production equipment, we invite proposals on technologies that visualize and reduce CO2 emissions from the equipment and save energy, and on the development of high-function materials.
2 Parts manufacturing, testing, transport
Regarding the processes including component materials production, machining, surface treatment, cleaning, testing, and transportation, we invite proposals on technologies that visualize and reduce CO2 emissions from the processes and save energy, as well as on packaging reductions and 4Rs (reduction, reuse, reclamation, and recycling).
3 Assembly of equipment
Regarding the assembly of equipment, we invite proposals on visualization and reduction of CO2 emissions from the processes and on saving energy.
4 Equipment logistics
Regarding the equipment logistics, we invite proposals on visualization and reduction of CO2 emissions from the domestic and international equipment transportation processes as well as on saving energy, packaging reductions, and 4Rs (reduction, reuse, reclamation, and recycling).
5 Equipment installation
Regarding the installation of equipment, we invite proposals on making utility systems more efficient and on saving energy.
6 Semiconductor and FPD production
Regarding the production of semiconductors and FPDs, we invite proposals on developing alternative gases, saving energy, and 4Rs (reduction, reuse, reclamation, and recycling) of gases and effluents.
7 Disposal and recycling
Regarding gas and effluent discharges from parts and equipment at the end of their life cycle as well as from the production of semiconductors and FPDs, we invite proposals on 4Rs (reduction, reuse, reclamation, and recycling) and detoxification technologies.

Checking and screening
TEL’s staff in charge will check and screen the submissions. Successful applicants will be notified in due course, and in-depth discussions may be initiated as needed.
Screening criteria
To be selected, the proposal must comply with the intent of this program and contribute to the reduction of global environmental impact.
R&D expenses
The cost of conducting joint research on the proposals that have been selected (and the cost of product development if applicable) will be discussed between the two parties; following which the possibility of financial aid by TEL will be considered.
Non-disclosure
The information submitted for the application will only be used for the purpose of checking and screening within TEL (including TEL Group companies). In principle, applicants should only submit the information they choose to reveal us on those terms.
